Joints are encased in a joint capsule.The synovial membrane lines the inside of the joint capsule.

You have had an arthroscopy to remove the joint membrane from your knee joint.An arthroscopy first involves making a small incision in the skin. A thin tube is advanced through this incision. There is a camera at the top of the tube. The camera transmits images of the inside of the joint to a screen. Instruments such as forceps and scissors can be inserted into the joint through other small incisions.
