You have a bursa abscess in your knee or lower leg.
The knee joint connects the thighbone (femur) to the lower leg. The kneecap is also part of the knee joint. There are 2 bones in the lower leg. These bones are called the tibia (shinbone) and fibula. There is also a joint immediately below the knee joint between the tibia and fibula.
A bursa is a cushion of connective tissue filled with fluid. For example, there is a bursa beneath tendons or between bones and skin. The bursa prevents the tissue from rubbing together. A bursa also enables pressure to be distributed better.
A bursa abscess is when a pus-filled cavity forms on or in the bursa. Pus forms when there is inflammation. This is particularly the case when the inflammation is caused by pathogens.
When you have a bursa abscess, the skin in the area affected can be red or swollen. This can result in pain or fever.
